Therapeutic ultrasound is actively being researched. Several types of therapy are being trialled. A few are approved by for use in Europe. The most common types are below. You will also find a list of more unusual therapies or proposed therapies.
Uterine fibroids are usually non cancerous muscular tumours that grow in the wall of the uterus. Focused ultrasound can be used to heat and destroy the fibroid tissue. The technology is currently in use in the UK.
Lots of cancers metastasise to bone. Bone metastases can be extremely painful because of the nerve-rich tissue surrounding bone. Focused ultrasound has been proposed for palliative care. It cannot be used to cure metastases. Devices are approved in the Europe. Clinical trials continue, although it is not currently used in the UK.

Focused ultrasound can be used to treat prostate cancer and BPH. There are a number of clinical devices being approved and currently being used throughout the world.
